I stripped the server down to just the system board, one PSU, one CPU, one VRM (no drives, no drive cage, no RAID controller.), tried replacing the RAM CPU and VRM, and it still kept rebooting. Power backplane is fully redundant right up to where it plugs into the system board. I tried running the server with just one PSU and then the other, but it kept rebooting.
Server had dual PSUs attached to two independent power sources. (That didn't happen of course.) I ran HP diagnostics in a loop for days, and it never found anything wrong.
So this power cycle looked as if someone pressed and held the power switch to force the server off, and then pressed it again immediately to turn it back on again. Power loss would log "Power restored to iLO". A graceful reboot would log "server reset" instead. ILO logs reported "server power removed" and "server power restored" with identical time stamps on both events. Windows reported "previous system shutdown unexpected" and there were no other errors on the OS level. We replaced it with a spare machine, and I had the broken box all to myself to play with. Its a esxi box that Im prepping for something, the esx compatible updater is a joke.

the SPP or PSP or whatever the heck its called is failing on the update, and it turns out I have to update it to 1.2 before going to current. We have one M元70 G4 that's been doing exactly that. I have several HP D元80 G7s that are on v1.1 of the ILO firmware.

Has anyone else experienced something like this with a DL series server? If so, what solved the problem? Is there any way to increase the verbosity of the iLO log? If the iLO could log why the server is being reset, it would be enormously helpful.
